Assam Orunodoi Scheme

The ‘Orunodoi’ or Arunodoi Scheme is a flagship welfare initiative launched by the Government of Assam on 2nd October 2020, aimed at providing financial assistance to economically disadvantaged households across the state. Under this scheme, eligible families receive a monthly financial support of ₹1,250 through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), with the amount being credited on the 10th day of each month. The scheme prioritizes women as the primary caretakers of the household, designating them as the direct beneficiaries. Announced by the then Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma—now the Chief Minister—during the 2020-21 Budget speech, the Orunodoi scheme was described as the “foremost bead” among the Ashtadash Mukuta (18 Pearls) of development initiatives.

In a later update, the Government of Assam announced an enhancement in the monthly benefit under the Orunodoi scheme to ₹ 1,450, further expanding its reach to over 26 lakh families in the state. The financial assistance aims to cover essential expenses such as food, medicine, and hygiene products, thereby empowering women and uplifting underprivileged households. Transfers are now made on the first day of each month to ensure timely support. Since its inception, the scheme has played a significant role in promoting financial inclusion and social welfare among Assam’s marginalized communities.
