Selection Process of IBPS Clerk Recruitment

Selection is a two-stage online process with no interview. Candidates must first clear the Preliminary Examination (screening only), then appear for the Main Examination. Only Main Exam marks are used to prepare the merit list, converted out of 100 for provisional allotment. Both stages carry 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer; unattempted questions carry no penalty. Scores across sessions are normalised using the equi-percentile method.

No Interview: Selection is Prelims → Mains → Local Language Proficiency Test only.

Preliminary Examination

Test Questions Marks Duration
English Language 30 30 20 Min
Numerical Ability 35 35 20 Min
Reasoning Ability 35 35 20 Min
Total 100 100 60 Min

Main Examination

Test Questions Marks Duration
General / Financial Awareness 40 50 20 Min
General English 40 40 35 Min
Reasoning Ability 40 60 35 Min
Quantitative Aptitude 40 50 35 Min
Total 160 200 125 Min
Pattern Change: Main Exam is now 160 questions/200 marks in 125 minutes, up from 155 questions/120 minutes last year. The Reasoning & Computer Aptitude section is now simply “Reasoning Ability.”

Local Language Test & Provisional Allotment

The Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) is conducted after the Main Exam and provisional allotment, but before joining. It is qualifying in nature – candidates who fail are not offered appointment. Candidates who studied the opted language up to Class 10 are exempted on producing that marksheet. Assam candidates who studied Assamese, Bengali or Bodo in school should keep it ready.

Qualified candidates are ranked and allotted a bank through a centralised process in March 2027, based on merit, state, category and bank preference order – once made, allotment cannot be changed. IBPS also maintains a reserve list of ~30% of vacancies per category, with allotment from it possible 3–4 times if further vacancies are reported.
